Dr. Pierce’s water-related research is focused on improving agricultural irrigation efficiency by combining site-specific information on climate (online CIMIS weather station data), canopy growth (from aircraft or satellite imagery), and soils within a water balance simulator to develop daily irrigation schedules that are tailored to local environmental conditions and plant needs. In partnership with Mondavi and Hess Collection Wineries and NASA-Ames Research Center, his project has focused primarily on vineyards with potential for expansion into other fruit and nut crops. He has used these tools in his past CSUMB courses (Ecosystem modeling, Plants of CA, Intro to the Atmosphere) to help students understand relationships between the environment and ecosystem water use.
