John Korey was born in Brooklyn, NY in 1944, and grew up in Brooklyn and Garden City, NY. He received his bachelor's degree in government from Georgetown University in 1966, and his Ph.D. in political science from the University of Florida in 1971. Except for serving as a visiting professor at Cal State Los Angeles in the mid 1990s, he has taught political science at Cal Poly Pomona since 1971. He is the author of a textbook on California Government (5th edition, Wadsworth, 2009). He serves on the Cal State University Social Science Research and Instructional Council, and from 2000 uintil 2004 was on the council of the Inter-university Consortium for Political and Social Research.
In 1968 he married the former Mary Haggerty, who did her undergraduate work at Trinity College (Washington, DC), received her MBA at Cal Poly Pomona in 1982, and is Managing Director of Investments at the Automobile Club of Southern California. They have two children, Meghan Lukasik (a clinical psychologist and Team Leader of the Developmental Diagnostic Clinic at Childrens' Hospital of San Diego) and David (Director of Finance for Karl Storz Endoscopy of America), and five grandchilden. They live in Orange, where John is a lector at Holy Family Cathedral Parish (RC).
